Tips to Stay Awake

We all have those days at work on which staying awake is just a little bit more difficult. Whether you haven’t slept well because of the heat, pulled an all-nighter out and about or figured a hot night between the sheets would be more important than a good night’s sleep, we just can’t always be our fantastic, energetic selves.

Of course you could drink litres of coffee and energy drink, but you could also try a more natural approach to staying awake. We have eight ideas to try for when you can’t seem to stop yawning at work.

1. Go outside
All the artificial lighting, the constant staring at your computer and the musty air won’t do much good for your sleepy head. Get outside for fifteen minutes, walk around for a bit and get some fresh air.


2. Move
Your colleagues might give you some strange looks, but maybe they’ll want to join you! Increasing your heart rate will ensure more oxygen being pumped through your body to your brain. Jumping jacks, skipping rope or running up and down the stairs, it all works!


3. Cool off
A quick wake up, drink a glass of ice-cold water with lemon and splash some cold water on your face. It also helps to hold an ice cube against your wrist or to suck on one.


4. Snacktime
Don’t go for the carb and sugar filled snack, but go for fruit and something with protein. For example cucumber with chilli powder or water melon with cayenne pepper.


5. Adrenaline
A good scare makes you alert and attentive, so watch a trailer of a horror- or action movie!


6. Change positions
Your chair might be in the relaxing position, which probably won’t do much good. Try some other position or dump the chair altogether, working standing up should keep you awake.


7. Dance
Tune in on a good song and dance for five to ten minutes. If that doesn’t ensure you will wake up, the embarrassing looks from your colleagues probably will.


8. Laugh
When you laugh endorphins are released which wake up your body. Exchange the latest jokes with your colleague who’s also struggling with staying awake or watch a couple of funny videos.
