Scientists Predict About Children

Scientists learn more about humans every day, for example that we could have known as baby’s whether we’d be success full, we’d be a problem child or if we’d be bad at exams. We have no idea whether this is soothing, but secretly it feels pretty good to know that we just couldn’t do anything about some aspects of our life. See here the six things scientists could predict about small children.

1. Patient four-year-olds will be more success full
In 1960 lots of children were tortured, they were put in front of a plate with candy, but got some instructions with it. They could choose between having one piece of candy now or having two pieces after waiting fifteen minutes. Just 30% was able to bring up the patience to wait for their two pieces of candy. Later it has been researched and found that these 30% became more success full than the 70% wanting their piece of candy too soon. The impatient 70% appears to be more stressed, has more trouble keeping in touch with friends and score lower on tests. Obviously a very simple test for your own child, immediately makes clear whether you have a potential Nobel prize winner at hands.

2. Baby’s fed on demand are smarter
Baby’s that are fed whenever they want to, for example when they cry, will be smarter than baby’s who were fed on a regular schedule. When these baby’s were eight their IQ was already about five points higher. This effect stays visible throughout their teens. It’s related to the development of the brain, to learning how to communicate with other people.

3. Snoring babies will be problem children
Researchers have tracked the sleep- and behavioural habits of a group of children. This made clear that baby’s who snored so cutely when they were little are one and a half times more likely to become a hyperactive yelling child. This would be because when snoring more oxygen gets to the brain, because of which something goes a little differently with the emotional and social part in the brain.

4. Small babies do worse on exams
I wouldn’t quit saving for a college education just yet when you find out your little baby is especially really little. Though it has been proven that very small babies have a lower IQ later on. At eight they let all children take an IQ test and then again a different test at 20. Both tests proved that small babies did less good. The leading researcher says that you shouldn’t expect your enormous mega baby to win the Nobel prize though.

5. Grumpy toddlers become gamblers
In the 70s a group of researchers decided to observe three year olds. After 90 minutes of alonetime with a toddler they would classify him/her into a specific group. The groups were: well-adjusted, reserved, confident, inhibited or under controlled. About ten percent weren’t the researchers’ favourites, they were placed in the last group. These toddlers had, according to the scientists, no self-control, were impulsive and had wilful behaviour. The children have been examined again at 21 and 32 and the researchers found out that the last group had twice as much chance to develop a gambling problem.

6. Babies without fear become criminals
Researcher Adrian Raine looked at results from 1970, which measured the fear reaction of three year olds. The 1800 toddlers had to listen to two sounds. One neutral tone followed by nothing and one neutral tone followed by a terrifying wail. After a while the toddlers knew when the scary sounds would come and they’d start sweating. However, there were a few who didn’t react at all. Raine took a look at the lives of our toddlers in 2009 and found out 137 of them have a criminal record. Shocking is that everyone of these 137 toddlers did not show any reaction of fear to the scary sound. Of course it could also be possible that the other toddlers were just better at hiding their crimes…
