Why is muscular pain worse on day two?

You probably know it, you’ve done some great exercising and you feel really good the next day. No muscular pain, you can still move rather normally and no lactic acid build-up. A day later you get up out of bed… or not… After the first try to pull yourself out of your bed you cramp up back in bed, that’s not going to work.

Why is it that you feel like you’re spontaneously going to die of muscular pain the second day, while you felt absolutely fine the first day? This is because you have two different kinds of muscular pain. There’s the first muscular pain, which is often caused by a lactic acid build-up in your muscles. This causes an immediate muscular pain, which will probably go away in a couple of hours. The second kind comes is late muscular pain, which comes from little tears in the connective tissue of the muscles. This is not bad at all, it’s a sign your muscles are readjusting, so it’s proof that your workout has been effective!
